The hallowed waters off Guatemala's Pacific coast, long revered as the world's premier sailfish grounds, once again bore witness to an extraordinary feat of angling. On March 2nd, Dr. Helen Tang, fishing aboard the iconic 'Intensity,' didn't just break a record – she shattered it, releasing an incredible 19 sailfish on fly tackle.
This wasn't some casual day on the water. Every single fish was caught under strict IGFA rules, on 20-lb tippet, a testament to Dr. Tang's skill and the 'Intensity' crew's expertise. For those of us who've wrestled a hot sail on conventional gear, imagine the finesse and stamina required to do it nineteen times over with a fly rod. It's a masterclass in angling.
Dr. Tang's achievement surpasses the previous record of 18 sailfish, set in 2012 by Kara Weisman – also aboard 'Intensity.' This speaks volumes about the consistency of this fishery and the caliber of the program Captain Chris Sheeder runs. While some chase the big checks, others, like Dr. Tang, chase the pure challenge and the indelible mark left in the record books. It's a powerful reminder that conservation and competition, especially under IGFA fly-fishing protocols, go hand-in-hand, celebrating the fish as much as the angler.
